Our History
Mentor United Methodist Church is grounded in a rich history of ministry in the Mentor, Ohio community as a church that has been here for over 200 years!
In 1818, Rev. Ira Eddy, a native of Vermont and a circuit rider for the Methodist movement, established regular services in the small village of Mentor, Ohio. Rev. Eddy began meeting with four families in their homes. The congregation grew over the next two decades and in 1843 The Mentor Methodist Episcopal Church was incorporated. That year, land on Mentor Avenue was purchased for fifty dollars. A wooden frame church building was erected in 1848, an organ was added in 1867, and a parsonage was built in 1881.
Church membership grew throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century and by the twentieth century, it was decided that a newer, larger church was needed. The new brick church opened in 1906. Some members gave stained glass windows in memory of loved ones. The Epworth League, a Methodist association for young adults, gave the dome for the church. This dome is the same one that tops the current chapel.
By the 1960s, it was clear that the congregation had outgrown the current church. A new sanctuary was built in 1963 to the west of the old building—the Sanctuary that continues to house Traditional worship services today. Many of the stained glass windows from the 1906 church were preserved and are now displayed throughout the church. With that expansion, The Mentor United Methodist Preschool began in 1967 with just two classes. The church acquired a new name in 1968 with the merger of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren Church to become the Mentor United Methodist Church.
The twenty-first century brought the construction of the Gallery, as a meeting and reception area, as well as the introduction of Modern worship services in Fellowship Hall, and the remodeling of the education wing. This church continues to grow through worship and ministries that honor our past as well as through new endeavors that bring us into the future.
A worship community that started with four families has grown into a thriving United Methodist church with over one thousand members. Mentor United Methodist Church brings the Word of God and Christ-centered discipleship to its members and guests, demonstrating God’s Love to the community, the nation, and the world.
